Medicare Thresholds

Medicare Safety Nets have thresholds. You’ll reach the thresholds when you spend certain amounts in the gap and out-of-pocket costs.

Once you’ve reached the thresholds, you’ll start getting higher Medicare benefits. This means you’ll get more money back from Medicare for certain Medicare services.

Only verified payments count toward the threshold. Verified payments are when you pay for your health professional service in full before you make a claim from Medicare. If you have unverified payments, you’ll need to pay them before they count toward your threshold.

Click here for more information about getting more money back.
You can register for the Medicare thresholds here.

What is the EMSN

The Extended Medicare Safety Net (EMSN) provides an increased Medicare benefit for Australian families and individuals who have high out-of-pocket costs for out-of-hospital services, once the annual threshold is reached. This benefit is up to 80% of future out-of-pocket costs for out-of-hospital Medicare services for the rest of the calendar year, subject to caps on some services.
