MEDICARE SUPPORT

Medicare Safety
Nets

If your out-of-pocket medical costs reach a certain threshold in a calendar year, you may qualify for increased Medicare benefits — meaning bigger rebates for the rest of the year.

  1. Thresholds reset each calendar year

Your safety net counter resets on 1 January. Both individuals and registered families have separate thresholds.

  2. Verified payments count toward the threshold

Payments paid in full at the time of consultation, then claimed back from Medicare, are counted as 'verified' and accrue toward your threshold faster.

  3. Higher rebates kick in automatically

Once you cross the threshold, Medicare automatically increases your rebate percentage for eligible out-of-hospital services for the rest of the year.

EXTENDED SAFETY NET

The Extended Medicare Safety Net (EMSN)

Once you reach the annual EMSN threshold, Medicare covers up to 80% of your out-of-pocket costs for eligible out-of-hospital services for the remainder of the calendar year. The remaining 20% is your responsibility.
